TOEFL stands for "Test of English as a Foreign Language." It is a standardized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers who are planning to study, work, or live in English-speaking environments. The TOEFL test measures a person's ability to understand, use, and communicate in English in academic and professional settings.

There are different versions of the TOEFL test, including the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) and the TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test). The TOEFL iBT is more commonly used and evaluates the test taker's skills in four key areas:

1. Reading : this session will test participants' competence in understanding English texts. So that participants will be given text on a particular theme and then given questions related to the text. Speaking,

   Listening : usually a video or audio will be played so that test takers must listen well. After that, questions appear related to the video and audio played.

2. Speaking : is a session to test the ability to speak in English. This session is modeled after an interview so that participants are face-to-face with the examiner to answer a number of questions.

3. Writing : testing participants' ability to compose English writing is usually asked to compose an essay. The theme of the essay is determined by the institution that organizes the TOEFL test, regardless of the type of TOEFL tested. .

4. Scores on the TOEFL test are used by universities, colleges, and other educational institutions as part of their admissions process for non-native English speakers. Many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification bodies also accept TOEFL scores to assess language proficiency.

The TOEFL test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), and it is widely recognized and accepted in many countries around the world.
